| | Chris Wheeler - Writer/photographer/paddler
It is with great, great sadness we recieve the news that Chris has lost his lfe while paddling his beloved River Dart in Devon. I’d spoken to Chris only the day before accident regarding an article of his on paddling the Zanskar River that was about to go in to that issue.
Here at CKUK we were lucky enough to have called Chris our friend and he had been contributing to the magazine on a regular basis from the beginning. Chris was always supportive and positive, but his feedback was frank and honest and over the years his input certainly shaped the way the magazine is today.
As a kayaker Chris was a highly experienced and wise whitewater paddler, who had paddled on many of the world’s greatest whitewater rivers. In later years he had also become an accomplished and skilled sea kayaker. Quietly spoken and a true gentleman Chris touched the lives and inspired many with his infectious enthusiasm and eloquent writing about the sport that he was truly passionate about. I know many of you will have read with pleasure Chris’s articles. Be it a report from a challenging expedition to a far flung river, sea kayaking in Ireland with his partner Julia, and even on one occasion his guide to ‘Marriage Guidance for Paddlers’; Chris always wrote from his heart, with candour and integrity and, of course, with his trademark dry wit
Chris was paddling the upper section of the River Dart with some of his closest friends for the third time in a day when the accident happened. It was one of his favourite runs, a section that he knew intimately, and at a level that had previous experience of and would be considered truly excellent by experienced and skilled kayakers, such as Chris. In fact in that last e-mail Chris spoke of his excitement at the weekend’s forecast and the action to come, and with his usual sharp humour gently took the Mick regarding us being stuck over in the ‘flatlands’ of Lincolnshire.
Hundreds attended Chris’s funeral service to pay their final respects and the slight of boats strapped on many a car roof rack would no doubt of made him smile. At the Adventure Paddlers Weekend, which followed at the River Dart Country Park, a slide show of images of Chris on his many, many paddling adventure had the entire place in total, respectful, silence and many where amazed and just how many trips Chris had done over the years, and I’m sure that everyone was thinking about him as they headed out on to the local rivers the following day. Rivers that Chris loved. He really was a great and true ambassador of the sport
Chris’s light burned brightly and for all those who were lucky enough to meet and know him, or read his inspirational words, the world is a little darker for his passing.
He will be missed.
