Tragic Loss
Jason SmithPosted on 22 Nov 2009
It is with utter shock and deep sadness that I have just recieved a phone call to inform me that Chris Wheeler has lost his life whilst paddling the Upper section of the River Dart in Devon.
Chris was a very, very experienced paddler, with a wise head, and he was paddling on one of his favourite runs at a level that he would have been delighted with. According to BBC news reports he became caught under a submerged tree.
Chris was a friend and a valued contributor to Canoe & Kayak UK from the very beginning. It was only this week that we were swapping e-mails with Chris, talking about paddling and discussing an article of his about a recent Zanskar trip that's gone in to the latest issue of the mag. The world is a darker place today without Chris in it.
Our thoughts are with Chris's partner, family and friends.
