We’ve been using the Newfoundland for the last eight months in a variety of different paddling situations. It’s been on rock hopping missions, one or two longer fair weather sea kayak trips. Kayak touring trips on inland rivers and plenty of open canoe trips, including multi-day adventures.
It’s an all-round XP50 2-layer fabric, lightweight Inuit style jacket for day paddlers complete with adjustable storm hood. Its features include a front zip opening for fresh air ventilation, Velcro adjustable cuffs, articulated sleeve panelling with no underarm seams, zipped chest pocket, adj
ustable hood, elasticised draw cord at waist, fully taped seams throughout and reflective detail at sleeves
We really like the feel of the Newfoundland and we’ve found that when it comes to touring missions it’s the cag that we reach for in the CK gear shed every time. It’s been comfortable to wear on sea kayaking trips, but the fact that it doesn’t have any neck or rest seals means it’s a fair weather only option and if you take a roll then you’re going to get wet. For open canoeing and kayak touring though it is the business. It breathes well and the easily adjusted cuffs and open neck allows you to regulate your temperature easily while on the water. If things turn nasty the hood is good, it’s well designed shape and wired peak means that it keeps the weather out of your face but still allows plenty of visibility. When not being worn it packs down really well and doesn’t take up too much room in the dry-bag. The cut is good and it provides plenty of freedom of movement when kayaking and when paddling a canoe.
It’s versatile too. It’s great for wearing around camp and if needed it can double up as a walking or biking jacket. It’s well constructed and tough too. After a lot of use it’s bearing up well and showing no signs of wear in any of the usual places. In our opinion Palm have done their homework when designing this and the Newfoundland is a great bit of kit that ticks a lot of boxes in a lot of situations. We’ll certainly be continuing to use our test cag for a long time to come.
