Pyranha Kayaks Jeds Eye Freestyle Kayak Review
The Pyranha Jed Eye Freestyle Kayak in action surfing a big wave. The Jed (Eye) is the new freestyle kayak from UK kayak designers and manufacturers Pyranha Kayaks. It’s a top end performance freestyle boat. The slightly strange name comes from the fact that Pyranha didn’t want to fall foul of a certain film mogul empire with a penchant for suing kayaking companies. Jed (eye), Jedi, get it?

The arrival of the Jed has been highly anticipated and such was it’s popularity that we had to wait a fair while before the team at Pyranha could nab one from all the shop deliveries and get a test boat to us. We’ll be bringing you a full test report and video but these are our first impressions.

So will the Jed (Eye) help you to feel the freestyle’ force? Pyranha have used a tucked rail on their last few freestyle designs but have opted for a more conventional single rail on the Jed. This is a very good thing in our opinion. It allows the Jed to release fast and clean, ideal for snappy, dynamic modern freestyle wave moves.

The Jed is also a little narrower than many other current freestyle kayak designs and this allows the paddler to go from edge to edge really easily and to get over the edge to really drive the Jed’s very fast hull in to moves. It’s a very good wave boat and will certainly shine at UK spots like Hurley, Shepperton, Sunbury, Newark etc, not to mention popular big wave freestyling destinations like Lyon, The Ottawa and the White Nile.

It’s a freestyle all-rounder too (a good trait in a kayak for UK freestylers) and it’s great in a hole too, ideal for playspots like HPP, Teesside, Cardiff and Lee Valley. The Pyrahna Jed is super-responsive and reacts to the slightest input from the pilot, so just like Luke Skywalker you can line it up and strike with laser precision for some really explosive moves. The thing that struck us most about the Jed was how balanced it feels, in our opinion the volume distribution is right on the money and the result is a kayak that just feels really good on the water. It also means that it's prety handy at 'old school' frestyling staple like cartwheeling and split-wheels.

A UK designed and built freestyle kayak with the performance, and comfort to really challenge the recent dominance of US Kayak manufacturers in the freestyle kayak sector is a very good thing in our book, and in the few sessions we’ve had in the Jed (Eye) it’s certainly made an ‘force-full’ impression on us.

We've been testing the medium, but the sall version should be hitting the shops now and the large is imminent.
