Donkey Flips at Hurley

Once again we headed along the M4 to Hurley one snowy Saturday morning. Jacko met us once again and announced today’s session would be focusing on Donkey Flips. Sam, Jacko, Dan and I hit the water and immediately got practicing. We also did some bank work. Jacko has a new way of thinking of donkey flips; left edge left throw... it certainly made them straighter. We went back to Jacko's to analyse them and think about what actually goes on. Sam and I then headed over to Marsh to play on the second wave. This was great as we could put into action all that we had just been discussing. By the end of the short but cold session both Sam and I were nailing them nearly ever time!

A Morning at Marsh

07 Jan 2010 21:04

Sam and I turned up at the football ground by marsh weir not knowing quite what to expect as we had never visited before. Jacko met us and we quickly kitted up and hit the water. Dan turned up a few minutes later meaning it was just the four of us on the water. At first we found getting onto the wave difficult due to the fact that the bottom level was about a foot below the ledge. Unfortunately I got rope burn tiring to use the rope to get across but eventually I found a method for getting over the wall and then the training really started. The wave had a great left shoulder meaning big blunts were possible as well as all the usual marsh moves. Previously I have only been only to flip turn so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to learn to Felix. I quickly got the hang of them but did not try too many due to the 'ice cream head' feeling. Dan and Sam were practicing donkey flips when I started trying back stabs. This was something I had only tried a few times and I was pleased to start getting vertical after only a few tries.

After Jacko and Dan left the lockey dropped the weir to 6 gates meaning only the second wave was possible to get on. We had fun trying moves on a trashy feature (Sam’s deck popped but luckily managed to get to the side without getting washed against the bridge stations.

Thanks to Jacko for a wicked session.

Sam made an awesome video found here (and on TV Freestylers): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HwaZaM2bBM&feature=player_embedded

P.S. I had a great time skiing. One night we had a meter of fresh powder!
